San Francisco

Needing a tooth extracted can be a scary diagnosis. At Uno Dental, we take a relaxed and thorough approach to restorative dentistry – our goal is to make sure you feel comfortable and confident in your results and your treatment plan for both oral health and overall health.

Most people think of having a tooth pulled when they think about scary dental procedures. Although restorative dental techniques and technologies have come a long way, it’s normal to dread having a tooth extraction. The truth is, tooth extractions can be one of the most reliable ways to save the health of your mouth and allow for other restorative treatments, so it’s important to partner with a board certified dentist who can make sure you understand the process and prioritize your comfort during a difficult procedure.

Tooth extractions are sometimes a necessary part of keeping your mouth healthy and free of infection. There are a lot of reasons you might need a tooth extraction, but it’s normal to have anxiety about it. That’s why our restorative team will work with you to help you through the process and ensure you’re relaxed and pampered at our luxury San Francisco office.

Why Choose Tooth Extractions at Uno Dental San Francisco?

Tooth extractions can be recommended in certain cases. These can include:

  • Decay or infection that is too deep for treatment
  • Injury or trauma
  • Tooth crowding
  • Baby teeth that don’t fall out
  • Insufficient room for future tooth shifting

Many people have their wisdom teeth extracted as a regular part of their lifetime dental care. However, other teeth may need to be extracted based on Dr. Kandar’s restorative treatment plan. Extractions can sometimes be a necessary step in other restorative treatments like implants, bridges, or dentures.

When looking at your options for extractions, your comfort matters. Extractions don’t have to be scary or uncomfortable, so we create a relaxed and pampering environment focused on you and your experience. During your appointment with Dr. Kandar, we’ll take time to thoroughly discuss your goals and potential outcomes for extractions so you know exactly what to expect.

What Can I Expect During Tooth Extraction Treatment?

Your restorative process will begin by talking with Dr. Kandar about your ideal outcomes and taking some x-rays of the tooth and underlying structures. This helps us take the right approach during extraction. In some cases, simple tooth extractions can be performed by a dentist with local anesthesia. In other cases, surgical extractions need to be performed by an oral surgeon using sedation. Dr. Kandar can determine which option is right for you.

For a simple extraction, you’ll be given a local anesthetic. Once you’re comfortable, the tooth will be gently loosened and separated from the surrounding gum tissue using specialized tools before being pulled out. During a surgical extraction, an incision is made in the gum to remove the underlying tooth. In either case, the gums are then manipulated to protect the underlying bone for recovery.

How Can I Get the Best Results from My Tooth Extraction Treatment?

Aftercare is key when it comes to keeping your mouth healthy after an extraction. Our team will give you detailed instructions to follow that include keeping the area clean and free of infection using special mouth rinses and avoiding certain foods. You’ll experience some discomfort after your procedure, but Dr. Kandar will make sure you understand which medications to take and in what amounts. You should make sure to ice the area regularly to keep swelling down and avoid any strenuous activity. Generally, you’ll feel back to normal within a week or two. Our team will be available throughout to make sure you’re comfortable and confident in your recovery and your restorative treatment options going forward.

Tooth Extraction FAQs

How many days should I rest after tooth extraction?

You should make sure to take about two to four days to rest after your procedure. Putting strain on your treatment area through exercise can cause bleeding issues, so make sure to follow Dr. Kandar’s instructions.

How long after an extraction can I remove the gauze?

Gauze will be put in place after your extraction to help a clot form and prevent complications. You can take this out after 30 minutes.

What is dry socket?

Dry socket is a complication that develops when the blood in the treatment area doesn’t clot, or the clot dissolves before it’s fully healed. This can be painful and you should contact our office if you experience symptoms.
